College League And Cuppers Rules

1. Aim

The principal aim of the college league is to promote running throughout the university.

2. Eligibility

All members of college (including under-graduates, post-graduates, fellows and college staff) are eligible to run for the college team.

A team will not count towards the league unless it is comprised solely of members of one college.

Mixed sex teams will not count towards the league.

3. Divisions

There shall be one men's division.

There shall be a single women's division for all teams.

At the end of the season, the bottom three teams in the men's first division shall be relegated to the second division, and the top three teams in the men's second division shall be promoted to the first division.

College Cuppers is a standalone competition with no separate divisions.

4. Team Sizes

An unlimited number of runners are permitted to represent each college, filling any number of teams of the sizes shown below. College second and subsequent teams will be included in results for individual races but will not receive league points.

4.1. Races

4.2. Relays

4.3. Cuppers

5. Scoring

5.1. Determining College Positions in Races and Relays

5.1.1. Races

Men and Women will race separately and be scored according to the runner's finishing position in these races.

The winning runner of each race will receive a number of points equal to the number of finishing runners, one less will be awarded to each subsequent finisher to the last runner who will receive one point. Runners who do not complete the race receive no points.

Runners completing a race outside their college first team, shall also earn points towards the first team score, but not directly determined by their overall race position. Ten such subsequent runners for men's teams and six subsequent runners for ladies' teams shall receive two points each if the race has over forty finishers, one point if less than this.

Runners may score for incomplete first teams, but other incomplete teams will not be counted.

The points earned by each college team as detailed above will be summed, and teams ranked in their divisions, greatest total first. If colleges are tied on points from a race, they will be ranked according to the position of their first team's final scoring runner. (If either team is incomplete, the more complete team shall be placed higher).

5.1.2. Relays

Men's divisions and ladies races will be combined, but all scoring will be determined as if separate races had been run.

The first team to finish all its required number shall be the winner. Any incomplete teams will be placed according to the number of legs completed, then total time taken.

No runner is permitted to run more than one leg of the relay.

5.1.3. Cuppers

There will be one men's and one women's race. In each race, points are awarded to each runner according to their finishing position.

The winning runner of each race will receive a number of points equal to the number of finishing runners, one less will be awarded to each subsequent finisher to the last runner who will receive one point. Runners who do not complete the race receive no points.

Points for each member of a college team (of the sizes stated above) are summed to obtain the team score.

Runners may score for incomplete first teams, but other incomplete teams will not be counted.

Teams will be ranked, greatest total first. If colleges are tied on points, they will be ranked according to the position of their final scoring runner. (If either team is incomplete, the more complete team shall be placed higher).

5.2. Awarding College League Points

After each event league points will be awarded as below:

Under no circumstances will a college not competing in a race receive any points towards its league score.

No college league points are awarded for college cuppers.

5.3. Determining League Positions

After each event the league points will be added to each teams previous total. After the last event the teams with the greatest total in each division will be declared the winners. If teams are level on points, the team which competed in more races shall be placed first. If still equal, the team which scored the higher number of points (between those equal) in most races shall be placed first.

6. Charges

Every college competing in the college league and/or cuppers is required to pay a league fee of £35 (£17.50 or female-only colleges). This covers the costs of the college league and college cuppers and should be payed to the Junior Treasurer at cuppers.
